Sculpture by the Sea wants ME!

I have had exciting news. My proposal for Sculpture by the Sea has been accepted! I'll be exhibiting my Gokko-Neko and Gokko-Inu sculptures around the cliff face of The Boot as you approach the Icebergs. This means I'll be a busy bee but there's nothing like an imminent deadline for motivation. I'll also be making a small inflatable piece for the SxS indoor exhibition. In the mean time I have managed to squeeze in time to complete Gokko-Uma (Make Believe Pony). This piece is based on the timeless kids character "My Little Pony", hope you can tell!. My first pony is being exhibited down in Melbourne at the Toorak Village Sculpture Exhibition at Weideman by Douglas Clarke, 474 Toorak Rd. The show runs till the 31st May. I'm still juggling work with teaching and I am very excited to be one of the first guest teachers to run at workshop at Jane Sawyer's Slow Clay ceramic studio in Melbourne. I've had so many enquiries from Victoria that I've decided to finally make it happen. The printing on clay workshop will run on Sat 14th & Sun 15th of July, 2012. Feel free to get in touch with Jane if you're interested!.
Another great event scheduled for this year is the Keane's Open Day. This year they are raising money for Lymphoma in the memory of their sister who fought a hard battle with it last year. There's always a diverse range of demonstrations at the event and this year it will be held at Brookvale T.A.F.E. My gig is surface design which will include printing, slip decorating, and under glaze decorating. It's on Saturday 30th June from 10 - 2pm and best of all it's FREE!. I haven't scheduled my regular workshops at The Workshop Arts Centre yet but I'm sure I'll be running a Printing on Clay and Mould Making Workshop in the July holidays. Keep your eye on my FB page for details.

Workshops for 2012

Another year has gone....whoosh...
A great year of change for me. A new job, a new horse (sculpture), and a new place to live (coming soon!). I still teach at The Workshop Arts Centre in Willoughby though and its actually an exciting time there because the ceramic studio is getting a face lift. So if you'd like to come and check out the new facilities come and do a Summer Workshop!. I'll be running a Printing on Clay wknd and a Mould Making & Casting workshop in Jan 2012. www.workshoparts.org.au

ART SYDNEY 2010

While waiting an hour and a half for my Friday night pizza I have decided to start updating my blog. It's hard to concentrate though will a rumbling tummy!. Every spare moment of my time is being spent in the studio at the moment. I'll be launching my limited edition sculptures Gokko-Neko and Gokko-Inu at Art Sydney 2010. A hundred sculptures will be made in total and they will make an appearance in sexy metallic black, bronze, dark silver, gunmetal, and bumblebee. I'm part of an exciting new initiative called stART that gives self-represented emerging artists an opportunity to run their own exhibitions and sell direct to the public. Opening night is on Thursday 11th November from 5pm - 9pm. It then runs from Friday - Sunday.

Lust of the Huldra, Porcelain and Mixed Media.

Ultra: Blamann, Porcelain and Mixed Media.

I am rushing off to indulge in some traveling before I start my residency at The International Ceramic Research Centre in Denmark, so there's not much time for blogging but hopefully the pics will speak for themselves.

I presented my work on Friday 15th May in a small project space at KHIO. The exhibition was titled Ikke selg skinnet for bjornen er skutt, a norwegian proverb meaning Don't skin the bear before its hunted down. I wanted to use the context of Norwegain proverbs for my titles as they are also linked to folklore and legends, the basis of my project.

The Blue narrative titled Ultra: Blamann, was exhibited at The Norwegian Porcelain Biennale held in Porsgrunn on the 8th May. The exhibition finishes at the end of May, so I have decided to donate the work to The Oslo National Academy of Arts. So, for this exhibition I presented a large print out of the work with a 3D animation of snowflakes projected over it.

Wood & Salt Firing Workshop with Poul Jensen

In late March a group of us from the Ceramic Department went on a little adventure in search of a small island in Denmark called Fejoe. After a long car journey, we stumbled upon the residence of Poul Jensen and his wife Anne. Our mission was to fire two kilns over the week. It was the continuation of a kiln building project that they has started with Poul last year, and we were there to christen the virgin kilns. We started off firing the Olsen Fast Fire Wood Kiln and struggled to get to temperature, so we read the manual once again and decided to change our approach. The second firing was much more successful and top temperature was reached, enough to enable us to salt the kiln for the second firing. We unfortunately ran out of time to fire the large oil kiln but I suspect Poul is firing it while I type and we should be looking forward to a delivery of work very soon!.

Can Serrat

In February this year the Ceramic students at KHIO were invited to work on a project for the Sculpture Park in Can Serrat, Spain. This beauuuutiful artist residency is situated at the foothills of the Montserrat Mountains near the quaint town of El Bruc. I spent an inspiring week there helping the students with their project and sight seeing in Barcelona. The project was based on traditional Norwegian folktales and the pieces were then placed on metal beams, constructed to resemble an indigenous Sami tent. My contribution was the cluster of mushrooms on the forest floor.
